The DEFENDER is the entry point into the Puronics line, and entry point does not mean stripped down. Is the DEFENDER a Salt Free Softener?

No, and we put that here in plain sight because this exact confusion has burned homeowners before. The DEFENDER regenerates on salt or potassium through a downflow brining system. That is what makes it a real softener. If your street has a salt discharge restriction, your HOA bans brine systems, or your household is strictly low sodium, then no salt based softener is the right buy, this one included. The genuine salt free products are the CLARIUS and GOODSPRING, and they live on the salt free water systems page. Anyone who tries to sell you the DEFENDER as a salt free system is wrong about the product.

How the DEFENDER Keeps the Price Down

One place: the tank. Instead of the food grade 316L stainless steel on the premium systems, the DEFENDER uses a polyethylene inner liner inside a fiberglass shell. The liner is what the water touches and it cannot corrode; the fiberglass carries the pressure. What stays identical to its bigger siblings:

  • SilverShield HYgene. Same carbon-plus-silver bed as the flagship tanks, doing the same two jobs, taste reduction and keeping the tank itself sanitary between cycles.
  • S-759 monospheric resin. Uniform beads for higher flow rates and efficient softening, reducing hardness, iron, and turbidity.
  • iGEN digital valve. Regenerates on your actual usage, keeps 60 days of history, and alerts you when the filter is due.

Does the budget model skip SilverShield?
No. The DEFENDER carries the same SilverShield HYgene as the systems above it: activated carbon that reduces chlorine and chloramine tastes and odors, with embedded silver that inhibits bacterial growth inside the tank. The silver ion approach came out of NASA water purification research, and it did not get cut to hit the price.
So where does the lower price come from?
The tank. The DEFENDER uses a polyethylene inner liner with a fiberglass outer shell instead of the 316L stainless steel on the TERMINATOR and FILTRAMAX. The liner cannot corrode and the fiberglass carries the pressure, so the water result holds up. You are giving up the premium tank material, not the treatment.
Can I use potassium instead of salt?
Yes. The DEFENDER's downflow brining system regenerates on either standard softener salt or potassium chloride. Potassium costs more per bag, and for most households plain salt is the practical choice, but the option is there if sodium is a concern. If sodium is a hard restriction, though, look at the salt free line instead.
What certifications does the DEFENDER carry?
It is WQA certified per NSF/ANSI 44, covering hardness, barium, and radium reduction, and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead free compliance, and the SilverShield is EPA registered. Budget position in the lineup, same independent testing standards as the rest of it.
What sizes does it come in?
