Is the DEFENDER a Salt Free Softener?
No, and we put that here in plain sight because this exact confusion has burned homeowners before. The DEFENDER regenerates on salt or potassium through a downflow brining system. That is what makes it a real softener. If your street has a salt discharge restriction, your HOA bans brine systems, or your household is strictly low sodium, then no salt based softener is the right buy, this one included. The genuine salt free products are the CLARIUS and GOODSPRING, and they live on the salt free water systems page. Anyone who tries to sell you the DEFENDER as a salt free system is wrong about the product.
How the DEFENDER Keeps the Price Down
One place: the tank. Instead of the food grade 316L stainless steel on the premium systems, the DEFENDER uses a polyethylene inner liner inside a fiberglass shell. The liner is what the water touches and it cannot corrode; the fiberglass carries the pressure. What stays identical to its bigger siblings:
