Why Cartridge Filters Fail Without Warning
Your filter may have stopped working months ago and nothing told you. That is the catch with cartridge systems, which is what most whole-home filters use. The material inside is rated for three to six months, and once it saturates there is no alarm, no colour change and no drop in pressure to warn you. Chlorine passes through a spent cartridge as easily as through no filter at all.

Which Setup You Need Depends on Your Water
Orange County's water comes from two distinct sources, and the filtration chemistry is different for each:
- Orange County Groundwater Basin cities (Santa Ana, Fountain Valley, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, Garden Grove): Disinfected with standard chlorine. Standard granular activated carbon removes it effectively.
- MWD-imported water cities (Moulton Niguel, South Coast, Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, most of south OC): Disinfected with chloramine, chlorine bound to ammonia. Chloramine does not off-gas like chlorine and requires catalytic carbon to break down. Standard carbon filters are insufficient.
This is one of the first things the free water test identifies. If you are on a chloramine district and have a standard carbon filter, it is not working the way you expect it to.
